The Soul Riot

Band Bio

Music takes many shapes — and so do The Soul Riot.

What began in 2016 as a stripped-down acoustic duo has continuously evolved, shaped by different phases, influences, and line-ups along the way. From the very beginning, The Soul Riot have resisted being boxed into a single genre. Drawing from soul, metal, grunge, prog rock, funk, and Balkan folk, the band’s sound has always been raw, honest, and unapologetically exploratory — music that asks questions rather than offering easy answers.

Founded by bassist Julio Dakovic in 2016, the project quickly solidified with the addition of drummer Oliver Reps, forming a tight and fiery rhythm section. By the end of 2017, guitarist Plamen Dimitrov joined, adding melodic depth and expanding the band’s sonic reach. In their early years, the band performed under the name Djoona, experimenting relentlessly, gigging extensively, and refining a sound that refused to stand still.

Over time, The Soul Riot passed through different creative chapters — including a vocal-driven phase in the early 2020s — each leaving its mark on the band’s identity. These experiences ultimately led to a clearer vision and the adoption of the name The Soul Riot: a reflection of constant movement, inner tension, and creative rebellion.

In February, the band welcomed Anna Okunowski as their new vocalist and keyboardist. The lineup is currently revisiting their repertoire, with Anna rewriting lyrics to bring fresh perspectives to the existing catalog. Heavy and melodic, tight and explosive, intricate yet direct — shaped by Julio’s Balkan-influenced grooves, Oliver’s driving and expressive drumming, Plamen’s riff-based but atmospheric guitar work, Anna's vocals and keyboards are forming  the sound of The Soul Riot.

On stage, The Soul Riot are known for intense, immersive live performances that blur the line between band and audience. Whether in intimate clubs or on festival stages, their shows emphasise energy, connection, and momentum — music that lives in the moment and hits without needing explanation.

With new material in development and live shows ahead, The Soul Riot are moving forward with focus and intent. This is a band defined not by a single phase, but by evolution itself.

Follow the noise — and join the riot.
